INTRODUCING THE ALL NEW NUKEPROOF DISSENT CARBON DOWNHILL BIKE

The new Nukeproof Dissent Carbon downhill bike might be the worst kept secret in mountain biking. It’s been on World Cup podiums, raced at Red Bull Hardline and even made it to the top step of the 2022 Crankworx Rotorua Downhill.

The Dissent Carbon has been out there, getting beat up and put to the test by some of the best downhill riders in the world. There’s no substitute for the pressure cooker that is world-class downhill racing, so we felt there was no better place to develop its prototype. Our riders raced it and gave us feedback, we listened and refined. The result is a downhill mountain bike designed with insight from some of the best riders in the world, with the goal of helping you ride like one. 

Now made of T700/800 monocoque carbon fiber and with improved suspension kinematics over its predecessor, the Dissent Carbon builds on the race-winning legacy of the Dissent Alloy. We’ve added more rider-tuneable performance features, refined the handling, and incorporated a plethora of feedback. Riders can also now choose between a 290 and 297 wheel setup by simply changing a set of flip chips built into the chainstays, adding even more adjustability to a bike that’s become a favourite among downhill privateers.

The Dissent Carbon prototype proved hugely successful. In the 2022 season it racked up a number of podium finishes and wins in top-level events around the world. Most notably, Louise Ferguson’s win at Crankworx New Zealand and Ronan Dunne’s incredible UCI Downhill World Cup podium in Snowshoe, West Virginia. The new frame faced the ultimate test of strength at the 2022 Red Bull Hardline, coming away unscathed in the hands of Ronan finishing 4th, Adam Brayton 12th and Chris Cumming 18th. To put it short, the new Dissent Carbon has been tested thoroughly and tested hard.

Nukeproof’s downhill bike has been on a constant evolutionary journey since its inception in 2011. Beginning as the Scalp, the original bike saw success at the highest level. The Scalp then evolved into the Pulse, which, piloted by Sam Hill, won two World Cups in the 2014 season. That legacy continued with the development of the Dissent Alloy, which as a prototype won its very first international outing at the 2018 Garbanzo Downhill at Crankworx Canada.

Since then, the Dissent platform has racked up a healthy resume of UCI World Cup podiums and national championship wins. It’s earned a reputation as a race-ready workhorse that’s incredibly stable and ultra-adjustable; as a bike that instils confidence in world-class pros and privateers alike.

WHY MAKE IT FROM CARBON FIBER?

Like many decisions at the Nukeproof HQ, the decision to make the latest Dissent from carbon fiber was not commercially motivated. Some after-hours concept sketching of a potential Dissent Carbon frame whet the appetite; it looked so good, it just had to be made.  

Aside from looks, building the new Dissent from carbon gave the Nukeproof engineers freedom to make several improvements and incorporate some new features into the frame. Carbon allows for more complex shapes that can add strength, stiffness and compliance to enhance the feel of the bike. The motive wasn’t to reduce weight, but weight loss is a positive side effect — the new frame is 430g lighter than its predecessor (a NP1 frame weighs 3.46kgs RAW).  

AN UNCOMPROMISING FIT 

The Dissent Carbon now includes multiple ways to dial in a perfect fit.

• Three Frame Sizes: NP1 / NP2 / NP3  

• Adjustable Headset: -6mm / 0mm / +6mm  

• Adjustable Chainstay: -5mm / 0mm / +5mm 

The redesigned frame now offers a vast amount of adjustment, really allowing riders to dial in a reach and position on the bike to perfectly fit them. Wheelbase flip-chips additionally allow riders to easily adjust wheelbase trailside to suit various terrains and styles.   

UNCOMPROMISING SUSPENSION PERFORMANCE 

A design originally conceived to test different leverage curves with our athletes, the Dissent Alloy used flip chips to adjust progressivity across four positions. The new Dissent Carbon builds on this idea to make altering the positions easier. The new frame features a three-position adjustable main pivot that’s simple to tune on the fly with no need for separate flip-chips.

All three settings have a high beginning leverage rate to make it super supple off the top yet offer good consistent mid-stroke support. At the bottom of the curve a regressive end-stroke prevents spiking under bottom out. The new kinematic adds a degree of sensitivity to the beginning of the stroke, allowing riders to go up a spring rate without adding harshness. It also works much better with the new generation of air shocks. Going up a spring rate is usually preferable to more compression damping as it suits fast riders and prevents spiking that could otherwise lead to punctures or damaged wheels.  

ONE BIKE, TWO WHEEL SETUPS    

The Dissent Carbon will be offered stock in both 29” and mixed 29/27.5” wheel configurations. But, regardless of what wheel setup a rider chooses to buy, riders now have the option to switch between configurations by simply inverting a flip-chip. Adjusting this flip-chip compensates for the new wheel size and ensures the kinematic and geometry remains the same.    

AN UNCOMPROMISING FINISH

Nukeproof has also paid close attention to the finishing touches of the new Dissent Carbon. Tube-in-tube cable routing makes maintenance easier and keeps the frame looking clean while keeping cable noise to a minimum. Integrated bump stops protect the head tube and aid in securely channeling the cables. To finish, all frames come standard with a pre-fitted clear protection kit.  

A quiet bike is a good bike, and Nukeproof has taken the time to develop custom durometer 3D-contoured frame protection, which is fitted to the chain and seat stay area to prevent chain slap. The downtube is also protected by a large protector kit that extends over the ISCG tabs to ward off rock strikes.
